Welcome to the 30th Annual Umoja Festival! One of the oldest celebrations of African and African-American culture in the country, Umoja is a Kiswahili word meaning unity. The Umoja Festival planning committees have been meeting since last fall in preparation for this milestone 30th anniversary celebration. Start making your plans to visit Portsmouth, Virginia May 27 – 29, for the festival. We have something for everyone . . . music from local and national artists; an international marketplace with foods and handcrafted wares from around the world; children’s activities, the Heritage Stage, exhibitions, and community information area. Visit the “About the Umoja Festival” site for history and background on this wonderful event. The lineup of entertainment has also been posted. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on our website, call Parks, Recreation and Tourism at 757-393-8481 or call Marketing & Communications at 757-393-5143. Again, welcome. We look forward to your visit.
